IN PRACTICE
A town-extension project, an engineering survey and a stockpile survey can all begin with aerial imagery, but they need different outputs. For Namibian survey practices and planning teams, the important connection is between field capture and the drawings, models or GIS layers that colleagues actually use.
Start with the client’s deliverables, coordinate reference and required checks. Identify what the aerial survey should capture and what still needs a ground survey.
Plan coverage around the terrain, structures and visibility of the surface. Ground control and independent checkpoints should be considered as part of the survey design, rather than added after processing.
Choose outputs such as an orthomosaic, surface model or point cloud to suit the project. Align file formats and handover requirements with the surveyor, engineer or town-planning team.
